Merton Abbey Mills.
Merton Abbey Mills, located near the site of the medieval Merton Priory, has a rich historical legacy that spans centuries. Once home to one of the most significant monasteries of the Middle Ages, the area later became renowned for its textile manufacturing, most notably as the location of William Morris’s textile design company from 1881 to 1888. For much of the 20th century, the site was known for Liberty’s silk-printing works, which operated until 1970.
After nearly 20 years of neglect, Merton Abbey Mills struggled with outdated facilities and a lack of engagement with contemporary visitors. While it remained a cultural hub, it had not evolved to meet the expectations of modern audiences.
We were appointed as a branding agency briefed with balancing modernisation with heritage: The key challenge was to revitalise the space without losing its historical charm so the brand had to reflect both the artistic, artisan history of the Mills and the desire to create a more dynamic, modern space that would attract a younger demographic, families, and businesses.
The outcome has been a complete overhaul of the Mills’ branding, including its signage, promotional materials, and overall image, creating a cohesive identity that is modern yet reflective of its rich heritage. The project is ongoing.
